Winst Nikon hoger dan verwacht

Nikon had an unexpected gain in fiscal first-half profit, citing cost cuts and sales of cameras and steppers. The company also raised its full-year profit forecast.

Net income was about 9.3 billion yen ($79 million) in the six months ended Sept. 30., compared with 7.81 billion yen a year ago, the company said today. Nikon had forecast a 7 billion yen profit.

Tokyo-based Nikon is benefiting from rising sales of digital single-lens reflex cameras and cost cuts at its chipmaking equipment business. The company is focusing on more profitable single-lens reflex cameras that are geared toward professionals and hobbyists as competition pushes down prices.

First-half sales rose to 342 billion yen from 312.2 billion yen a year earlier. That's 6.9 percent higher than the company's earlier forecast of 320 billion yen.

The weaker-than-expected yen also contributed to the profit, the company said. The company is scheduled to report earnings Nov. 14.

Nikon also raised its full-year net income forecast by 15 percent to 15 billion yen today. The company had a 24.1 billion yen profit a year earlier. Sales are now expected to rise to 700 billion yen, compared to an earlier target of 680 billion yen.
